Owning a swimming pool in your backyard is a luxury, but it’s a luxury that requires regular maintenance. It's necessary to hire a professional company to perform regular maintenance in order to avoid any hazards and to safeguard the people who are enjoying your pool on a regular basis. Professionals are equipped with specialized equipment and skills to thoroughly inspect your pool for any leaks and cracks in the liner.

First, whether owning a pool is new to you or you’ve been a pool owner for quite some time, it is important to understand the dangers of leaks and cracks. Secondly, to fully understand how leaks are detected and repaired by professionals. Water loss varies from day to day; however, it is normal to see 3 mm to 6 mm of water loss daily due to evaporation. If you notice your pool has water loss much more than the average, it is possible that there may be a leak in either the pool’s plumbing or in the liner. If this occurs, it’s time to call the professionals to conduct a thorough inspection, and possibly perform some repairs to avoid extensive damage to your pool and your property.

How Do You Check If You Have a Leak?

The Bucket Test:

Using this method, you’ll be able to determine if the water loss is due to evaporation or a possible leak.

  • • Fill a transparent bucket or jar with water and place it on the first step of the pool.
  • • If you don’t have a step somehow, adjust it, so that it is floating upright in the water.
  • • It is important that the water level in the pool relatively matches the water level in the bucket or jar that you’re using for this bucket test.
  • • During the test, the pool should not be in use.
  • • After three days, examine the water levels. If the water level in the pool is lower than the water level in the bucket or jar, it’s more likely you have a leak.

The Dangers of Leaks and Cracks:

  • • It could cause extensive damage to your property.
  • • It could create expensive structural damage to your pool.
  • • Higher water bills due to constantly refilling the pool.
  • • It becomes more difficult to maintain the pool’s appropriate pH levels. As the treated water leaks, the new water will need constant chemical treatments - resulting in excessive use of chemicals that will cost you more!
